Hooray for School! Preschool E-book Review

Hooray for School! is an adorable e-book geared towards helping getting your preschooler excited for school. It is written by Casey Berna and illustrated by Matthew McNamara. It features brightly illustrated pages and fun rhyming sentences that present the idea of preschool in a creative way.  This is a great way to introduce preschool in a way young children will understand. I think this is such a wonderful resource to have as little ones transition into a new chapter of their lives. Even if you are sending your child to daycare rather than preschool, it's still a great way to show how fun a new learning environment can be! While our preschooler and kindergartner are homeschooled at this point, they still enjoyed this e-book!

Hooray for School! is currently available to purchase on for Nook and Kindle e-readers. If you purchase the e-book over Labor Day Weekend, some of the proceeds go towards supporting Whitney Elementary School in Last Vegas, NV.

Check out the the kids like ike! company webpage for more children's e-books and other fun activities!

Disclosure: I was provided with a copy of this e-book to share with my children in exchange for this review. There was no monetary compensation. These are my real and honest opinions.

Our horse study unit (PreK/Kindergarten)

We're already in our third week of homeschooling. I can't believe it! Overall, it's been going very well. The kids are really enjoying themselves. Guggy (5) asks to do homeschool "all day, every day!" The only setback we've had is that our printer died last week. I haven't been able to print out our supplemental worksheets because of that. Hopefully I'll find an inexpensive one today!

We are finishing up our horse study unit. I geared the activities towards our 5 and 3 year olds. The first week, we looked at pictures of horses, learned about different types, and learned about their body parts. We also talked about different kinds of horses. To get some hands on experience, we decided to take a trip to a nearby zoo where they could ride ponies. This week, we found an easy horse craft. I even loved making it!

We used this horse worksheet from EnchantedLearning.com.

Horse print foot
(My son's real name has been blanked out on his craft for safety  reasons.
Sissy won't allow me to take a picture of hers. :P)
You can learn how to make this foot print horse at Busy Bee Crafts!

Starting our homeschool year

On Monday, we're planning on starting our homeschool year. I'm up late tonight planning our first week or two. This is new to everybody, so it'll be a fun (and interesting) experience for us all.

As for a schedule, we'll be rotating between mornings and afternoons depending on my husband's days off. This way I can give Guggy (kindergarten) the attention he needs. We're also going to do preschool at home for Sissy, who turns 3 in a little over a week. Mr A, who turns 2 in September, will be given some educational toys and some fun toddler and coloring activities to do. He doesn't quite have the attention span for us to do anything formal with him yet, so we'll just go with the flow for him.

Here is the curriculum we plan to use.

Guggy (kindergarten - age 5)

My Big Kindergarten Workbook
I actually bought this workbook from Wal-Mart. It has separate sections for beginning math skills, reading readiness, recognizing colors, shapes, and more. Basically, this will be our beginning of the year review of the skills he learned while in preschool.

Horizons K Math
We're starting with book 1. This book starts with counting and writing numbers and ends with basic addition. I'm really excited to see how we progress in his math skills as the year goes on.

Five in a Row
We're probably not going to start this right away. The concept of FIAR is reading the chosen book five days in a row. The lesson plans can be done in as little as 30 minutes. There are different exercises to do each day.

Teach Your Child To Read in 100 Easy Lessons
We've already dove into this one a lot. I'm going to be doing this with Guggy and Sissy both. I'm not sure if they'll be able to do it together as we've had some bickering, so we'll have separate learning times as far as this goes.

Sissy (turns 3 mid month - preschool)

My Big Alphabet Workbook
This book could work well with both preschool and kindergarten. It features letter recognition, letter-sound association, writing, ABC order, etc. The beginning parts of this book will be review for Sissy as she already has letter recognition down. She's already showing signs of reading readiness.

Fisher Price Kindergarten Workbooks 1 and 2
We're starting her with a lot of kindergarten skill as well. If you know our daughter in person, you know she's on par with her 5 year old brother with a lot of her skills. She can even count to 10 in Spanish. These are little $1 workbooks, but for preschool it's perfect as I can mix up what she's doing and see exactly where she's at.

Unit studies
Here's what we have planned so far for unit studies. During unit studies, we'll tie in our learning of the alphabet, numbers, writing, and reading. We'll also be studying about fall and winter weather when the time comes. I plan to also incorporate crafts, activities, and field trips to make these units hands on.

August- Horse unit
September- Frogs and toads
October- Harvest time/fall season
November- History of Thanksgiving
December- Holidays around the world

Websites and blogs

Enchantedlearning.com
For $20 a year, you can get a ton of printable worksheets for all ages. This is a great website to use to supplement your curriculum.

Kidslearningstation.com
I actually just found this one and I'm super excited about the free printable worksheets. We're going to be using this website quite a bit.

So that's it for the first part of our year. Wish us luck as we start this journey!

As parents: Stephanie and Robert Tobor, founders of Green Green Apple Supply want the best for our kids. And as global citizens, they were faced with the responsibility to care for our planet, and each other. They began as an endeavor to feed our family natural, organic foods has grown into a much larger enterprise. Learning about potential dangers to children, and the planet, in cleaning supplies, household goods, office supplies…everywhere. The worsening state of our environment, climate change, and increasing levels of toxins showing up in children’s blood work combined to create a great passion for exposing our family to only the cleanest, most wholesome products.  When they had inquired as to why individuals were choosing traditional products rather than opting for eco-friendly versions, typically given one of two answers:

1. Green products are too expensive.
2. There are too many choices, and some are not effective.</ span>

This was the beginning of Green Apple Supply! 17 Weeks Along

Baby #4 is due around January 9th, 2013.

To my surprise, this pregnancy is flying by. It's hard to believe I've hit week 17 already. The first weeks of my pregnancy were plagued with all day sickness until about three weeks ago. I'm very grateful to be passed that point. The only thing that helped was taking half a tablet of Unisom before bed.

So far, I've had two prenatal appointments and I'm due for another in the next week and a half. I absolutely love the midwife we've chosen to see this time. I've never had such friendly and compassionate care during a pregnancy. Soon, we'll probably be booking our level II ultrasound which we have to make sure the baby has not inherited any sort of heart defect.

I've wondered if we'd keep the gender a surprise this time (I didn't technically know with my first). I'm not sure if we'll find out at the ultrasound or not. We have decided on our names for either gender which we are keeping a secret from most people for the time being. ;-)

All in all, things are going very well with this pregnancy so far. I'm very grateful to not be having any problems and certainly hope it stays that way.
