I think it's important to take an extra supplement or two during cold and flu season. I also think it's important to have a diet based on whole foods so that our bodies get as much nutrition as possible. In some cases, like my own, I have to take extra supplements year round in order to stay healthy. (Another thing I can thank Celiac Disease for...or not.)
Here are a few of my favorite supplements:
Probiotics: Gut health is extremely important. Hippocrates once said, "all disease begins in the gut."
Vitamin D3: If you live in an area where there's less sun in the winter like we do, it's a good idea to take a supplement.
Zinc: This is a great mineral for boosting your immune system.
Vitamin C: Everyone knows about good old Vitamin C. This is one my parents always pushed when I was a child.
Elderberry: Elderberry is probably my all-time favorite immune booster. You can make your own or purchase it already made. Check out how Brittany from The Pistachio Project makes her own elderberry syrup!
Echinacea: This is a good one for reducing cold and flu symptoms, as well as boosting your immune system.
Part of healthy and/or natural living is not only having natural remedies around for when we're sick. We need to strive for having a strong immune system year round; so that when we do get sick, our bodies don't struggle to fight off viruses and infections.
